“The sins of the parents are visited upon their children in this entertaining thriller. BK’s (short for Beatrice Karen) and Trevor’s lives collide when a charity ball erupts into violence. Tightly plotted suspenseful moments and a deftly-executed plot twist combine to keep readers holding onto this novel until the wee hours.” – Publisher’s Weekly
“In Ray’s debut thriller, lives converge at a charity ball, where someone has planned a deadly act of vengeance… Ray takes her time establishing characters, including the bad guys, and with a rousing, indelible payoff, it’s well worth it” – Kirkus Reviews.

Denying the past proves deadly for BK Hartshaw and Trevor Mayhew in this gripping noir novel where nothing is as it seems. BK is a rising star at a public relations firm, and tonight’s charity ball should be a high point in her career. But a closely guarded secret threatens to destroy her chance for happiness with the only man she’s ever loved… a man who is also hiding a deadly secret. Trevor has tried to put the past behind him, pretending it never happened. But the conniving father he’s been running from for years has finally found him-and is determined to settle the score once and for all. BK and Trevor’s deeply buried secrets are about to catch up with them-and everyone they know and love. Who will pay the ultimate price for their dangerous denials?
About the Author
Amy Ray lives near the short but picturesque seacoast in New Hampshire with her husband and daughter. Before becoming a writer, she owned an old fashioned five and dime store where, in addition to regular priced merchandise, she had a display of items that actually retailed for five or ten cents each. When not writing, she has rediscovered the joy of tap dancing.
Dangerous Denial is her first novel. Her short story “All’s Fair” will be published later this year in Love Free or Die, the fourth book in the New Hampshire Pulp Fiction Series.
As with most books I review I read the synopsis for this book and knew I had to read and review it. The entire idea of BK having a secret and the one man she has ever loved having a secret also is really interesting. I was definitely interested in finding out how the entire novel would turn out- what would happen to BK? What about Trevor? and why does Trevor’s father want to settle the score?
I really loved how this book was written- it was thrilling and suspenseful. I flew through this book and didn’t want to put it down. I loved how Amy Ray really developed the characters, especially Trevor, and made you fall in love with them. Ray really ran the gammit of emotions with this book- you felt terrible for Trevor, which causes you to love him even more. You also experience one heck of a “bad guy”. Ray manages to make him to detestable that there is no way anyone can possibly like him. This just adds fuel to the BK and Trevor cauldron of love!
The format was interesting- it starts with the present day and then jumps back in time so that you can get BK’s and Trevor’s back stories (or the stories of their childhoods) and then proceeds with both BK’s and Trevor’s stories. It was interesting to see how they eventually came together. I think that having the back story for these two characters really helps readers develop empathy towards the characters and makes you want to continue reading- you really become invested in the story and the characters. I know I wanted to know what would happen to both BK and Trevor and didn’t want to put the book down until I found out what would happen.
Overall I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to others.
